The Silent Power of Body Language

Body language conveys non-spoken, loud, and clear messages as if someone were screaming about their feelings. You see a person with a sad look on their face. Their shoulders are slumped forward. Their forearms are clasped over their chest. What do you automatically know about this individual?

They are going through a tough time.

That person is not celebrating success. They aren't happy. That message couldn't be more apparent if they held a live press conference and had all the major TV channels broadcasting their displeasure. This is how powerful body language can be in conveying a message, though a single word is never uttered.

There are times when you want to show yourself as confident and capable. You can do that even when you might be experiencing some doubt in your abilities. Here are a few ways to harness the silent power of body language so you boost your self-confidence and command respect.

·      Make and maintain eye contact

·      Smile with confidence

·      Stop fidgeting

·      Stand and sit up straight

·      Stand instead of sitting if you can

·      Uncross your arms and keep them open

·      Widen your body stance and present the front of your body to your audience

·      Stand with your back straight, head up, shoulders back, and hands on your hips

·      Use deliberate gestures, but don't overdo it

·      Use facial expressions to convey your emotions and thoughts

·      Speak clearly, and don't hide or lower your voice

·      Move slowly and purposefully

·      Lean forward slightly, but not in an intimidating way

Looking someone in the eyes can be very powerful. It can also be intimidating if it is overdone. Once you make eye contact, try and maintain it. Watch for signs that you may be staring too intensely. Confident people don't look away and avoid eye contact.

The power pose tells the world you are confident and in control. It is a fearless pose. Spread your legs about shoulder-width apart. Place your hands on your hips. Put your chin up and place a confident and casual smile on your face. Keep your back straight. This pose alone can go a long way to letting your audience know you are self-assured and capable.

Your body positioning speaks volumes without you uttering a word. Your body language is often created unconsciously. That means you should consciously monitor the silent way you use your body, gestures, and facial expressions to communicate. The tips we shared here quietly promote an image of someone confident, capable, and worthy of attention.
